Site OS Upgraded to 10.04 LTS Server

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 -> 9.10 -> 10.0.4 LTS server. I still don't have snort working yet as there's an issue with the rules files which is probably unrelated to the upgrade. Other issues:

  • Apache2 had to be completely purged and re-installed along with perl.
  • ditto mySQL. Something went fubar with the startup scripts or something similar. Ubuntu 10.04 LTS uses the new "upstart" feature to start processes/services vs. the more familiar /etc/rc?.d scripts.

Son of Best Friend Dies in Car Crash

The son of one of my best friends died in a car crash on Friday night, 7 May.  A friend, also 18 years old, was killed as well.  Speculation as to the cause of the crash has been remarkably subdued from the 5th Estate, probably something to do with the horrific nature of the collision, a T-bone broadside on the passenger side of the teens' Pontiac Sunfire.  An SUV with 4 older adult passengers was the other vehicle involved. 2 persons from that vehicle were taken to hospital with serious injuries.  Unfortunately, size matters in these vehicular encounters.

RIP -- Sergeant Major Tripp, RMC

The Canadian military community lost a dear man with the passing of John (Jack) Tripp recently. Jack was the Drill Sergeant Major (DSM) of the Royal Military College (RMC) where I attended 1979 to 1983. He was an incredible personality, equal parts kindness and toughness. Definitely someone that we young officer cadets could measure ourselves against. He was also an honorary graduate, marching off with the class of '83. He later came back to the College, serving as its College Sergeant Major as a Chief Warrant Officer and earning the honarium "Mister" as in Mister Tripp!

2 New Static IP addresses. Now, what do do with them?!

I have just obtained 2 additional static IP addresses from my ISP for a total of 3. Not bad, eh? ...5 mbps DSL service + 3 IP addresses for $40/month.

Chevy -- Built Like a Rock

We just lost our dog. Actually, my wife and I just returned from the vet where we had to have him put down. Chevy was his name. Named after the trucks because he was built like a rock. At 34 pounds he was big for a sheltie (Shetland sheep dog). Fun loving pooch. We're going to miss him. Cancer took him at only 9 years old.

Why does losing a pet hurt so much?
